Taken from the pages of the Book of Kells (Circa 825) AD and Pictish Crosses of the 7th century. This loveknot pattern is a known as a Wheel of Life because it is symmetrical both vertically and horizontally. It represents heaven on earth, the four directions; seasons and elements. The continuous loveknot which makes up the pattern is symbolic of the dance of life, stepping left and right. Interestingly, the Wheel pattern of a cross in a circle is found in every culture and represents the sun or a heavenly body. In Celtic designs it is know as a Celtic Cross. The Book of Kells is an illuminated Bible which incorporated ancient Celtic Symbols into the texts artwork.
